About Dr. Christopher J. Matthews
Christopher Matthews, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the care of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. A graduate of the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center, he delivers thoughtful, minimally invasive, evidence-based care with a focus on helping patients regain comfort, confidence, and function in everyday life.
Dr. Matthews treats a wide range of conditions involving the upper extremity, including sports and traumatic injuries, fractures, arthritis, and peripheral nerve disorders such as carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome. His approach to care is grounded in listening closely, clearly explaining treatment options, and developing individualized plans that align with each patient’s goals and lifestyle.
He has advanced expertise in shoulder arthroplasty, including both anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement. Dr. Matthews personalizes these procedures using computer assisted preoperative planning and real time navigation technology. Through CT-based three-dimensional modeling, he creates patient-specific surgical plans that guide implant selection, sizing, and positioning, allowing for a high level of precision and intraoperative control, particularly in complex cases.
Dr. Matthews is also a primary referral resource for patients with thumb arthritis, also known as basilar or carpometacarpal joint arthritis. He has extensive experience treating advanced and complex cases, with a surgical approach that emphasizes pain relief, restoration of hand function, and thoughtful, individualized decision making to help patients return to the activities most important to them.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Matthews is actively involved in orthopedic education, advocacy, and professional collaboration at both the state and national levels. He has published clinical and basic science research and has presented his work at national and international orthopedic meetings..
Since 2020, he has served as a Board Member of the Florida Orthopedic Society, supporting statewide advocacy and leadership initiatives. In 2025, he was a speaker at the Shoulder Arthroplasty Clinical Evaluator Meeting, where he contributed expert insight on implant evaluation and emerging techniques. He also led physician networking initiatives at the OrthoConnect 2025 Annual Meeting, fostering collaboration and professional development among his peers.
Dr. Matthews combines a strong foundation of academic and clinical training with extensive experience in hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder surgery. His educational background, fellowship training, and years of practice have prepared him to deliver advanced, patient-centered care across a wide range of upper-extremity conditions.
