About Dr. Mark C. Gillespy
Dr. Mark C. Gillespy is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and lifelong Daytona Beach resident. He joined The Orthopedic Clinic after completing his residency at the University of Florida, following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Thurman Gillespy Jr., one of the clinic’s founders.
With decades of experience, Dr. Gillespy has dedicated his career to providing advanced orthopedic care while incorporating innovative techniques to improve recovery times and patient outcomes.
Dr. Gillespy specializes in spine surgery, total joint replacements (hips, knees, and shoulders), arthroscopic procedures, and nerve decompressions. He has developed expertise in limited-incision spine decompression surgeries and minimally invasive approaches for spinal fractures and fusion.
Dr. Gillespy was the first surgeon in Florida to offer the Barricaid device, which significantly reduces the risk of recurrent herniation after lumbar discectomy. For hip replacements, he performs anterior approach surgeries using computer-assisted navigation and a cosmetically favorable “bikini” incision, while his knee replacements utilize Kinematic Alignment techniques with robotic assistance.
His approach to care is centered on transparency and patient education. Dr. Gillespy believes in thoroughly explaining conditions and treatment options using X-rays, diagrams, and other tools, ensuring that patients feel confident and informed throughout their recovery.
Outside of work, Dr. Gillespy enjoys spending time with his wife and their three daughters and visiting their grandchildren in North Carolina.
He lives by the philosophy: “Life is like a car — there’s a big front windshield to see where you’re going and a small rearview mirror to reflect on where you’ve been, but don’t focus on the past.” This perspective shapes both his personal life and his patient care, helping him focus on forward-thinking solutions and meaningful outcomes.
